Kensington Gardens Square, Bayswater, London, W2 4DJ

Bayswater is well known for its Victorian garden squares; beautiful oasis of serenity, surrounded by tall, traditional, five and six storey stucco Victorian houses. Kensington Gardens Square is one of the very best examples of this kind of square, created in the 1860s for the pleasure of those living in the Many of those large Victorian houses have now been converted into smaller, but equally beautiful, houses and apartments. The gardens, however, remain almost identical to how they looked when they were first created. During the 1990s the gardens, which had fallen into disrepair, began a renovation process to restore them to their former glory; the beautiful railings that surrounded the garden (and had first been installed prior to World War II) had been replaced with wire mesh, but now traditional wrought-iron black railings stand in place around the square again.

This triangular shaped square is largely reserved for the pleasure of the residents whose homes surround it, but on special days during the summer months it is often open for the public to use and access too. There is no nicer place to spend a summer’s afternoon in Bayswater.
