The Royal Institution in Mayfair, London W1S

Mayfair is one of London’s most exclusive and attractive areas with a host of luxury shops, fine restaurants, and vibrant bars. Set in the very heart of the capital, the area is also home to many of London’s most famous landmarks and attractions.

The Royal Institution of Great Britain is one of Mayfair’s main attractions. Founded in 1799, the organisation is devoted to scientific education and research and is perhaps best known for its annual Christmas lectures.

Influential world famous scientists such as Humphry Davy, Michael Faraday, James Dewar and William Bragg were all based in this historic building. The Royal Institution is an historic building that has played a pivotal role in many of the scientific discoveries which still impact on our daily lives – 10 chemical elements have been discovered here and 14 of the Institutes scientists have been awarded the Nobel Prize.

The Royal Institution (RI) offers something for all ages. In the basement, there is a museum designed especially for children depicting the great men of science – it even features an interactive table of elements, which is a must-try exhibit for children of all ages.

Tours of the RI are run at regular intervals throughout the day, providing an insight into the history and architecture of the building as well as the stories behind some of the exhibition displays. Tours last around 2 hours and cost £6 per person.

While visiting the Institution, you can grab a drink and a bite to eat and the RI Café, which serves delicious cakes and coffee. The Bar+Kitchen also offers an extensive classic British brasserie menu featuring traditional bacon sandwiches, fish and chips, and club sandwiches. In the evening they also serve up impressive mezze platters and cocktails.
