Trooping the Colour in St James, London, SW1A
- by CityWest Residential
Until the Second World War, St James remained one of the most exclusive residential areas of London. Some of the most famous residences here, include St James's Palace, Lancaster House, Clarence House, Marlborough House, Spencer House, Schomberg House and Bridgewater House. It is now mainly a commercial area with some of the highest rents in London. That said, there are some stunning refurbishments and exciting new developments in progress.
St James remains one of London’s most popular tourist destinations, due to the sheer number of iconic attractions, the area is renowned for being home to one of the capital’s most famous Royal Parks.
Fittingly named, St James’s Park, the park regularly hosts a number of poignant ceremonial events and parades throughout the year. These include The Mall and Horse Guards Parade as well as the annual Trooping the Colour.
Trooping the Colour is one of the park’s most famous celebrations. Held on Horse Guards Parade within the Park, the spectacular ceremony marks the Queen’s official birthday each year.
The colourful and vibrant parade is the epitome of traditional British heritage and is screened live each year on a number of TV channels around the world.
Attracting visitors and tourists from far and wide, the parade takes place on the 13th June and is performed by the Household Division. Since it began in the early eighteenth century, the procession has become a permanent fixture in the Royal calendar of events.
The world famous, patriotic event can be viewed along The Mall or from the edge of St James’s Park. For those looking for a closer view, there is also the option to purchase tickets for seated stands around Horse Guards Parade, these seats, however, are in high demand and are determined by a ballot in March. All applications should be made in January and February.
St James’s Park also provides the perfect sanctuary to escape the hubbub of inner city London living. With its wide-open spaces covering an impressive 23 acres, the park boasts a large lake and children’s playground, and even provides deckchairs for public use from April to September.
