Westminster Cathedral in Victoria, London SW1P

Victoria is a busy area in the heart of central London. Close to many of the capital’s most famous attractions, there is plenty to see and explore.

Located in Victoria, Westminster Cathedral (not to be confused with Westminster Abbey!) is London’s main Roman Catholic Church and the largest Catholic church in England and Wales. Opened in 1903, the stunning building is the city’s only example of neo-Byzantine architecture and is the only church in England to have been visited by two Popes and the Queen.

Based on a basilican plan, the exterior of the iconic building is crowned by four domes and boasts a 284ft campanile, known as St Edward’s Tower. The Cathedral’s interior is just as impressive with intricate detailing, marbled walls and mosaic domes.

Regular services take place throughout the day and all are welcome to attend. If you just want to look around the Cathedral, it is free to enter and there is plenty to explore, including rare ecclesiastical objects, sacred relics and vestments. There is also a model of the cathedral, which is thought to be one of the greatest architectural models in Britain and certainly worth a look.

For a cost of £5, you can also take an elevator to the top of St Edward’s Tower where you can enjoy amazing views across the city.

The venue is also home to the Choir of Westminster Cathedral, which is thought to be one of the finest in the world. Hundreds of people gather each day to listen to their free Renaissance concerts - if you’re passing through Victoria, you might be lucky enough to hear them performing in the Divine Office and Solemn Mass!
